A relatively simple surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia.
Tongue Frenum (Tongue-Tie)
Often detected in childhood when speech develops.
A short or tight frenum restricts tongue movement, leading to difficulty pronouncing certain sounds — especially the “R” sound.
Surgical release is done using a Z-plasty technique, restoring full tongue mobility.
Lip Frenum
Usually treated between ages 8–12 when a gap (diastema) appears between the upper front teeth.
It can be released using Z or V-Y techniques.
With the introduction of dental lasers, the procedure is now:
- Less painful
- Faster to heal
- Does not usually require sutures
